The last 18 kms

Yesterday morning we rode to Ayers Rock (Uluru) to complete our bike ride. We began the trip on Sunday 17th May from the Adelaide GPO exactly two weeks ago. Raj and Jenny, Lily and Hannah arrived late Saturday night after flying into Alice Springs and driving to Yulara. It was great to see them and we joked about finally having a support vehicle for the last 18 km of our ride. Raj and Jenny have been instrumental in terms of bringing the whole concept to life and supporting us with their help and we are most appreciative.

The weather has been pretty ordinary but the Rock was still very impressive.

On arrival at the base of the Rock we took some photos which we will publish this morning. I was then happy to hand my bike over to Raj who embarked on a further 20 km ride around the base of the Rock with Gavan. I enjoyed swapping out the bike for a leisurely walk with Jenny and Hannah and Lily. It is very cold here which has been quite surprising. My childhood memories of Central Australia have always been associated with heat and dust not beanies, scarves, gloves and thick water and wind proof jackets.

I will publish some more dialogue today however I just wanted to inform you that we made it! Pictures are coming…..

Great to hear that you guys have made it safe and sound. Enjoyed seeing your pictures of the rock. Where are the tourists? Did you have exclusive r2tr access or something? Enjoy a few well deserved days off now.

Congratulations. Well done Shaun & Gav. A great achievement to complete successfuly & safely the task you set yourselves. Have a good rest & enjoy your break in Alice Springs. Don’t forget to take the girls to the Desert Park to see a Thorney Devil in the nocturnal house. Make sure also to see the short film they show regularly throughout the day.
