Background

The idea of partaking in a lengthy bike ride was discussed by the two of us about 18 months ago. In recent years we have both competed in The Melbourne Marathon, The City to Bay Fun Run, and the Mutual Community Challenge Tour. The concept of a bicycle ride across States to the Red Centre appealed to our mutual sense of adventure.

The idea gained momentum toward the end of last year when a work colleague of ours Beatrice Ruiz died from Cancer. Bea’s courage provided us with the impetus to challenge ourselves and organise the bike ride in her memory with the intent to raise money for a charity she would have endorsed.

In summary the Nelune Foundation aims to provide support, assistance and care for public hospital and underprivileged cancer patients in the community. The organisation was co-founded in 2001 by Nelune Rajapaske and Anna Guillan. Our objective is to raise money to fund the driver costs for the Foundation’s third Patient Transport Vehicle which provides free transport to financially disadvantaged cancer patients to get to their chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.

Donation

Our commitment is to ride the duration of the journey and raise awareness of the Nelune Foundation. We are riding without a Support Crew so we will also carry our essentials in a bicycle trailer. In speaking with potential Sponsors we have asked merely for a donation to the Nelune Foundation as opposed to financially supporting the ride. The expenses associated with the ride are being managed by the riders. We encourage you to support the ride and the foundation by contributing to the generation of funds which will ensure a driver is employed for the newly purchased Patient Transport Vehicle enabling disadvantaged cancer patients to be transported to hospital for their necessary treatment.
